Goal 15

Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

The biodiversity of nature makes it an irreplaceable source of natural raw materials and inspiration for new flavors and fragrances as well as for functional and active ingredients. This means that the preservation of biodiversity is a core interest for Symrise.

With our biodiversity management system, we work on promoting sustainable win–win solutions for business and nature. Our biodiversity concept therefore extends far beyond our company sites. Working with our stakeholders, we ensure sustainable procurement of natural raw materials. We want to structure our globally networked supply chains in such a way that they preserve biodiversity and use it sustainably. This will not only allow us to secure a long-term, reliable supply of high-quality natural resources, but also to actively contribute to implementing the goals of the UN’s Convention on Biological Diversity, an undertaking committed to the interests of future generations.

We launched a strategic partnership with the Global Nature Fund and the Union for Ethical BioTrade in 2014 in order to define the operations associated with our biodiversity agenda. In addition to analyzing and assessing our strategic supply chains in terms of biodiversity, we use their expertise for the development and implementation of effective biodiversity projects along the entire supply chain. We’ve integrated biodiversity aspects into our R&D activities and procurement policies, and train relevant stakeholders along the value chain, including the farmers who supply us directly.
